Poliomyelitis Vaccine Oral

Description

Poliomyelitis Vaccine (oral) bivalent type 1 and 3 (bOPV)is a vaccine containing a suspension of live attenuated Polioviruses strain 1 and 3.

bOPV is indicated for the prevention of paralytic Poliomyelitis caused by Polioviruses type 1 and 2.

Immunization Guideline:

 OPV drops are given as birth zero dose followed by additional doses according to the recommended vaccination schedule .

Bivalent OPV drops should replace all trivalent OPV drops from april 2016. 2 OPV drops are poured directly into the mouth of baby through a multidose vial. Older kids can be given drops placed on a sugar lump to avoid taste of bitterness.

If the child spits out the vaccine immediately after being given, dose can be repeated without any harm.

Contraindications

Child suffering from gastrointestinal discomfort such as vomiting and diarrhea can be given the vaccine but the dose is not counted and should be repeated after child is alright. Fever and cold is not a contraindication. OPV should not be given to child suffering from primary immunodeficiency caused by medicines, leukemia, lymphoma or malignancy.
