PRIORIX -TETRA

Description

Priorix-Tetra is a combination vaccine that prevents measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox diseases. It is a lyophilized preparation containing live attenuated measles, mumps, rubella and Oka vacrecella strain of viruses. Immunization with this vaccine can be done in infants from 9 months of age to children till 6 years of age. It may be used in children till 12 years of age based on previous experience with the separate components of vaccine.

Immunization Guideline

PRIORIX-TETRA is injected subcutaneously (SC), or intramuscularly (IM) in the deltoid region of the upper arm. The vaccine should be administered subcutaneously in subjects with bleeding disorders (eg. thrombocytopenia or any coagulation disorder). Alcohol and other disinfecting agents must be allowed to evaporate from the skin before injection of the vaccine since they can inactivate the attenuated viruses in the vaccine. Vaccination should not be administered intravascularly or intradermally. Infants in their first year of life may not respond sufficiently to the measles component of the vaccine, due to the possible persistence of maternal measles antibodies. Additional doses of a measles containing vaccine should be given according to official recommendations. MMRV is thus far licensed till 12 yrs age [24] and anyone 13 or older who needs protection from these diseases should get MMR and varicella vaccines as separate shots.

IAP recommendation 2016

1st dose of Varicella vaccine should preferably be given as a separate vaccine than MMR vaccine as higher incidence of adverse events following immunization with combined MMRV are reported in the age group of 12 months to 23 months. Increased risk of high fever (>39.5°C) , rash and febrile seizures are there in children below 2 years of age. MMRV vaccine can be safely given for second dose at 4-6 years of age.

Catch-up

If both MMR and Varicella vaccines not given earlier; 2 doses of MMRV or MMR and Varicella vaccines can be given 6 weeks to 3 months apart.

Contraindications

PRIORIX-TETRA should not be given to children with  known hypersensitivity to neomycin or to any other component of the vaccine (for egg allergy). A history of contact dermatitis to neomycin is not a contraindication.
Pregnant women and also women planning to be pregnant before 1 month has passed after vaccination should not take the vaccine. Children with severe humoral or cellular (primary or acquired) immunodeficiency should not take the vaccine.
