Description

JEEV™ is an inactivated Japanese encephalitis vaccine suspension.  JEEV™ is indicated for active immunization against Japanese encephalitis in adults and children. It is routinely used by people living in endemic areas or areas where recent breakout of JE epidemic is reported. It should also be used in children and adults  traveling into areas where JE is endemic, spending a month or longer in endemic areas during the transmission season, especially if travel will include rural areas. It is an optional vaccine meant for restricted high risk states.

Immunization Guideline:

JEEV should be administered by intramuscular route. The preferred sites are anterolateral aspect of the thigh for children or the deltoid muscle of upper arm for adults. Shake the contents of vial thoroughly to make the homogeneous solution. Discard the vaccine if not powder remains at bottom of tube or any discoloration is observed.  JEEV can be administered along with other routine vaccines in same visit but should be given with separate syringes at different injection sites. It should not be mixed with other vaccines in the same vial.

Children:

JEEV is licensed to be used in children of age 12 months  or more.  Two doses of 0.25 ml of the vaccine is given at minimum interval of 28 days.

Adults:

Two doses of 0.5 ml of the  JEEV vaccine is given at minimum interval of 28 days.

Contraindications

Medical supervision should be available to treat rare cases of anaphylactic reactions following the administration of the vaccine. Intramuscular vaccines should not be given to persons with thrombocytopenia, haemophilia or other bleeding disorders. JEEV should not be given to pregnant and lactating mothers.
