My child is due for the 2nd primary dose. But my pediatrician suggested that we should keep 2 months gap b/w primary doses as it is more effective. Besides, 2 months gap is the norm in USA and EU countries. Please suggest if such gaping is common in India too and whether keeping 2 months gap shall be as effective as one month? Thanks.
The minimum gap between the doses should be 4 weeks. If 2 doses of the same vaccine are given without maintaining this minimum gap, they are invalid as effective immune response is not achieved by the first dose before body is burdened with the second dose. 1 month gap or 28 days is sufficient to get the sufficient immune response. 2 months gap is better and preferred than the minimum 1 month gap as the effective immune response is achieved in given time frame.
Then, why we follow 1 month gap in primary series of vaccination?
- The first reason is adherence to the schedule. It is easy to remember next date of vaccination as the same date every month.
- In cases of catch up vaccinations, if late vaccinations have started
- In case if international travel, primary series need to be completed in time
